Jessie is from Manchester. I think the reason everyone is nice in the book is because the book is what it looks like - a quick, fun, fluffy read. If we had evil villains popping out of sewers it would be a bit weird! I think the movie references a lot of people can get. I'm 19 (20 tomorrow, admittedly) and I get most of them and enjoyed the book. I'd never seen most of the movies mentioned. Younger audiences have probably been made to watch the movies with their parents at some point or have heard of the references through other TV programs so they probably get the reference.
