Thanks for your thoughtful comment. I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed this one, and that you enjoy Clare’s work as a whole. I think given that this is a prequel the author has assumed that the reader is already quite familiar with the characters, and it may be that I struggled simply due to my lack of familiarity with the author’s previous work.

It was quite a long sitting, but to be fair this one does move quite quickly.

I bought the book in the London airport to read on the plane after reading the Mortal Instrument series. If a reader enjoyed those books, they will enjoy this one.
I very much enjoyed this book (along with her other books). I haven’t read any other of the “steampunk” books, or at least, I don’t think I have. I certainly wouldn’t call this a one sitting book, unless you have a very long sitting.
You mentioned that you didn’t think she gave much depth to the characters, if the author does what she did in the other books, she will give them more depth in later books. In fact, Will is mentioned in the fourth Mortal Instruments book, and that mention promises at least some new plot development on his part.
